Sound Company is a relatively small mixed choir
of twenty-and-thirtysomethings, and we've been around for about
ten years. It originally grew out of the Havering Youth Choir,
run by John Morris. The idea was to attract young (ish!) people
who wanted to sing primarily for fun, but also to perform. At the
moment, our conductor is a chap called Dominic Wadsworth, head of
music at Campion. We try to sing all kinds of music - sacred,
folk, jazz, musicals. We do it for fun, but with an eye on
musical achievement. We meet at Campion School, every Tuesday in
term time, from 8 - 10pm. There is a charge of £25 per term to
cover cost of room, conductor and pianist costs etc. In the past
we have performed Vivaldi's Gloria, Pergolesi's Magnificat,
Britten's Ceremony of Carols, Rutter's When Icicles Hang, and a
selection of jazz/light music including selections from musicals
like Jesus Christ Superstar, and short pieces like Bohemian
Rhapsody(!), String of Pearls, Chatanooga Choo Choo. We've also
performed folk selections, and some shape note American music.
Concerts are loosely themed, and we try to ring the changes
style-wise in order to vary the diet! We perform two/three
concerts per year. We have worked with other groups too,
including a touring company Folkworks, an American shapenote
choir and the Havering Youth Choir. We would be interested in
working with other local choirs on one-off concerts. Although the
choir is Romford based we have a healthy Brentwood contingent,
and have members from the Ilford way. We are always interested in
new members who are welcome to just turn up to rehearsals, or
alternatively contact Barbara Smith (the Chairman) at
Babs479@aol.com.
